Luke Auld-Thomas, an anthropology PhD student at Tulane University, dug deep into Google search results during his research. He stumbled upon old data from 2013, originally collected for a completely different purpose: measuring carbon levels in forests using airborne laser mapping (Lidar).

By re-analyzing this data, Luke discovered a hidden city dating back to the Classic Maya period (250-900 AD) beneath the dense canopy of Mexico's Campeche jungle. It covers a massive area of about 16.5 square kilometers! The site features enclosed plazas, temple pyramids, ball courts, and a reservoir.

Lidar scans revealed more than 6,500 pre-Hispanic structures in the region. This proves that Valeriana wasn't just a few abandoned stones; it was part of a vibrant, densely populated network where farms, highways, and bustling urban centers were all deeply interconnected.

This incredible event highlights the changing face of archaeology. Today, major breakthroughs aren't just made by swinging machetes in harsh jungle conditions for weeks, but also by cleverly analyzing open-source digital data from behind a computer screen. Still, experts make one thing clear: to truly understand when and exactly why these structures were used, getting into the field and digging the soil is still absolutely necessary! ⛏️

Valeriana is an ancient Maya city recently discovered in the dense jungles of Campeche, Mexico. The site was identified in October 2024 using Lidar technology, which employs laser mapping to detect structures beneath thick vegetation.

The city encompasses approximately 16.6 square kilometres and contains over 6,700 structures, including pyramids, plazas, a ball court, and a dammed reservoir. At its peak between 750 and 850 AD, Valeriana is estimated to have supported a population ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 inhabitants.

The site was uncovered by Luke Auld-Thomas, a PhD student at Tulane University, who analysed existing Lidar data originally collected for environmental monitoring. This discovery highlights the potential of repurposing existing datasets for archaeological research.

Valeriana's discovery challenges previous assumptions about the region's density and complexity of Maya urban centres. The city's extensive infrastructure and large population suggest a highly organised society with sophisticated urban planning and resource management.
