It is called Christ in the Wilderness, painted by Ivan Kramskoi in 1872. It shows the forty days in the desert, but Kramskoi leaves out everything we expect: there is no devil, no dramatic temptation, no glow of holiness.

There is only a man on a stone with his hands clenched together, having plainly sat there all night.

Look at the feet. They are bare on the sharp rocks, and they are bleeding. He has walked a long way in the dark and has not slept, worn down by a decision only he can make...

Kramskoi was clear about what he had painted. For him, he wrote, this was the image of a man with the highest sense of duty, caught in the moment he must choose.

Tolstoy, who understood a great deal about the weight of a conscience, told the gallery's owner it was the best Christ he knew.

Everyone comes, sooner or later, to some version of that stone: a morning when the right thing and the easy thing point in opposite directions, and no one else can make the choice for you.

The painter never tells us what Christ decides. Instead, he paints the weight of the choice before it is made. For the measure of a person is not what they do when the world is watching, but what they resolve to do in the grey hour, alone, when walking away would cost them nothing at all...
