She walked away from slavery in 1826 carrying her baby. Then she went back — into a courtroom — and sued a white man to get her son.
She won. She is one of the first Black women in America to do it.
Sojourner Truth died on this day in 1883.
New York was phasing out slavery. Her owner had promised her freedom early and then broke his word, so she walked out at dawn with her infant daughter and left the rest behind because she could not carry them.
Then she found out that her five-year-old son Peter had been sold illegally into Alabama — which New York law forbade.
She had no money and no education and could not read. She went to Quakers, raised the filing fee, and took the case to the Ulster County grand jury.
It took months. She got him back. He came home with scars.
She renamed herself in 1843 and spent the rest of her life on the road speaking — the only formerly enslaved woman most white Northern audiences had ever heard.
In the 1860s she desegregated Washington's streetcars by simply refusing to get off, and had her shoulder dislocated by a conductor for it. She sued him too, and he lost his job.
How many stories like Sojourner Truth’s were left out of what you were taught? If you want the stories beyond the textbook, this is where you start https://t.co/V6OJtazidd
She was the first Black woman in the world to win an Olympic gold medal.
At her homecoming celebration in her own Georgia hometown, the mayor refused to shake her hand, and she was made to leave by a side door.
Alice Coachman. 1948.
She grew up in Albany, Georgia, running barefoot on dirt roads because the town's athletic facilities were for white children. She trained by jumping over string tied between two sticks.
She was so far ahead of the American field that she won the national high jump championship ten years in a row — and the Olympics were cancelled twice, in 1940 and 1944, taking her best years away.
She finally got to London in 1948 at twenty-four, jumping on an injured back, and won.
King George VI handed her the medal.
She came home to a celebration in Albany where the audience was segregated — Black residents on one side, white on the other. The mayor sat on the stage with her and would not shake her hand.
She was not permitted to speak. Then she left through a side entrance.
She was the first Black woman on earth to do what she had just done, and her own town's mayor could not manage a handshake.
She later set up a foundation for young athletes and for retired Olympians who had been forgotten. She knew exactly what that felt like.
On the 50th anniversary of the release of the greatest, Stevie Wonder’s, iconic “Songs in the Key of Life” album, The Oakwood University Aeolians shared this. Beautiful. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
