He dropped out of school before his teens and spent decades bouncing between jobs

He grew older and started his own ventures, from ferry boat company that got wiped out by a bridge, an oil lamp business destroyed by electricity and a gas station crushed during the Great Depression

But Sanders kept going, at the age of 40, he opened a small roadside service station in Corbin, Kentucky and started serving fried chicken to truck drivers. The chicken became popular enough that travelers regularly stopped there to eat

Over time he expanded it into a restaurant and motel called Sanders Court & Cafe  but had to sell it after the start of World War II

At 65 years old Sanders was nearly broke and surviving on a $105 monthly Social Security check

So he loaded his pressure cooker and chicken seasoning into his car and drove across America trying to franchise his recipe

By 1963 and at the age of 66, Sanders had 600 locations, including overseas franchises in Canada, the UK, Mexico and Jamaica.

In 1964 he sold the business to investors for $2 million and by 1970 Kentucky Fried Chicken, now KFC  had 3,000 restaurants in 48 countries.
