#jamaledwards was my inspiration for wanting to go into music and media.

He showed me that I was capable of making a success of myself if I put my mind to it.

Maybe Jason Arday’s passing should make all of us think about where reporting ends and exploitation begins.

There was still a human being underneath those headlines.

Sometimes we remember that far too late.

How much is enough?

Media platforms have huge influence. Behind every headline, repost, comment and engagement figure is an actual human being.

Jason Arday was a young Black man with a life beyond what people were reading online.

I genuinely can’t remember a day recently where I haven’t seen Jason’s story there. Even on unrelated posts, you swipe and suddenly see his picture and another headline about his history.

At what point does reporting become a pile-on?

Day after day. Post after post. His name, his face, his past.

Eventually the allegation becomes somebody’s entire identity in the eyes of the public.

And now Jason has passed away.

I’m not here to decide whether Jason did or didn’t do what he was accused of.

But there is a difference between reporting allegations and turning one person into content every single day.

I’ve just found out about Jason Arday’s passing and it genuinely doesn’t sit right with me.

Whatever you believe about the allegations against him, the sheer amount of commentary, negativity and coverage surrounding one man has been relentless.
