i genuinely love and deeply adore how varkas kept his promise about the bird from back then, when thalia had to leave and asked him to heal it. rereading and paying attention to the little things between the lines really makes you realize how many references are hidden throughout the story, and this one genuinely hurts my heart so much. if you look closer varkas can really be such a soft soul in his own way. it’s such a tiny detail, but somehow it means so much to me.

he had two choices back then. he could’ve ignored thalia’s plea and just let it go, or he could accept it and heal the bird. and he chose to keep her promise. he chose to do something she asked of him, even when he didn’t have to. later after thalia’s death, he revealed that he actually did it. he really healed the bird and let it fly far away and free. he remembered something so small that thalia had asked him to do, and he kept that promise even after she was gone. and the fact that thalia never even got to know that he kept his promise breaks my heart.

i love these small details because imagine thalia never even knowing that he did it, and varkas still kept his word anyway. i genuinely love him so much for this. it’s such a small detail, but somehow it says so much about him and how deeply he cared about her.
