Premier investisseur externe de Facebook, fondateur de PayPal, fondateur de Palantir. Quand un homme voit juste aussi souvent, sur des horizons aussi longs, vous arrêtez de débattre et vous commencez à écouter.

Or Thiel répète une chose que presque personne ne veut entendre.

Nous avons bâti tout le capitalisme moderne sur la compétition. Et c'est une erreur de civilisation.

Il tient cette idée de René Girard, son mentor à Stanford. Girard a montré que le désir humain n'est pas spontané, il est mimétique. Nous ne voulons pas les choses pour elles-mêmes, nous les voulons parce que les autres les veulent. Et plus deux personnes convoitent la même chose, plus elles se ressemblent, plus elles finissent par s'entre-déchirer.

La compétition n'est donc pas le signe de la valeur. C'est le signe que tout le monde fixe le même point et que plus personne ne crée quoi que ce soit.

"Competition is for losers." La phrase de Thiel n'est pas une provocation, c'est un constat froid. Quand vous vous battez à dix sur le même marché, vous brûlez vos marges, votre temps et votre énergie pour récupérer des miettes. La vraie valeur se crée ailleurs, là où vous êtes seul, dans le 0 to 1, dans ce que personne d'autre ne voit encore.

Et Thiel pousse l'analyse plus loin encore, avec sa lecture de l'Antéchrist.

Le vrai danger, pour lui, n'est pas la technologie qui s'emballe. C'est exactement l'inverse. C'est une bureaucratie mondiale qui, au nom de la prévention de l'apocalypse, au nom de la "paix et de la sécurité", finit par tout figer, tout interdire, tout surveiller. Un pouvoir de la peur qui stoppe le progrès pour notre bien, et qui nous condamne à la stagnation. L'Armageddon administratif.

Maintenant, connectez tout ça à ce qui arrive.

Nous entrons dans un monde d'abondance. L'IA et la robotique vont effondrer le coût de production de presque tout. Dans ce monde, se faire la guerre sur des marchés existants devient complètement absurde. Le jeu à somme nulle perd son sens, parce qu'il y aura de la place pour des ordres de grandeur de valeur en plus.

Le seul jeu qui restera vraiment intéressant, c'est la création. Pas la capture, la création.

L'humain de demain n'aura qu'un seul rôle réellement noble: créer de la vraie valeur. Et créer, ça veut dire sortir du mimétisme. Ne pas faire ce que tout le monde fait, mais faire émerger ce qui n'existait pas.

Concrètement, créer de la valeur passera par quatre voies.

Des œuvres (l'art, le récit, la culture). Des bâtiments et de l'architecture, pour façonner l'espace physique. Des services, dans un mix humain et robot. Des produits qui n'existaient pas avant.

C'est pour ça qu'il faut réinventer entièrement notre système éducatif.

On dresse encore les enfants à entrer en compétition les uns contre les autres, pour des places rares, des concours, des classements. On les conditionne au mimétisme. C'est précisément l'inverse de ce dont l'humanité aura besoin. On devrait leur apprendre à créer, à voir ce que personne ne voit, à construire ce qui n'existe pas.

La compétition, gardons-la pour les jeux vidéo et le sport. Là, elle est saine, bornée, ludique.

Dans la vraie vie, le futur n'appartient pas à ceux qui se battent pour la même chose. Il appartient à ceux qui créent ce que personne n'avait imaginé.
