Back home in Nigeria, 2022, life was crushing us. Mum saw me fading at 24 & said, Go to the UK. Build a future. She borrowed money, sold her shop, went deep into debt she couldn’t repay just for my visa & ticket.
True life story. Come with me.
One of my close friend was on 50k (Naira) salary as of 2019 in Nigeria. He was an excellent student. Graduated top of his class for Bachelor and Masters.
He struggled to have a girlfriend. Every lady that he fancy rejected him based on his financial status. One of them was his classmate who knows his academic excellence. Still, she never gave him a chance.
In late 2019, he won a fully funded PhD scholarship. Started his PhD in France in January 2020. He completed his PhD in 2023. Before his PhD Defence, he was recruited by a R1 university in the US.
Around this time, that his classmate who rejected him started checking on him as she was still single. She had left Nigeria for Brazil to study and currently live there.
As per my friend, he is currently an assistant professor at a University in Boston, United State. He got married to his wife in February 2025. They had met in Nigeria on one of his visit.
To crown it, he is a US permanent resident having gotten it through EB-1A visa.
We hope someone daughter will not tell him in the future that it is her prayer and grace that bring him success.
Today, he is a PhD while his wife hold a bachelor degree. Have you seen the reverse in recent years?
Men are simple being, we rarely talk down on our woman.
Class of 2026 Scholars…. Lend me your ears mates.
It’s March 2026, exactly 6 months prior to completing your Msc/PhD which you earned honorably via those prestigious scholarships, and because you were a Scholar, never in your life have you try your hands on a “casual job”- which is not bad anyway. Your PhD applications, Post-Doc applications, Job applications all returned in the negatives so far, hundreds of them, you’re thinking of what next to do? Your savings ain’t that good either, you’re already contemplating returning to Nigeria maybe.
Hold on mates, we’ve all been there, all of us, I can tell you for free, don’t panic, remember how brilliant you were, the rejections before getting the Scholarships in itself, how you rose through the occasion to where you’re, nothing’s changed really, just that you’re now wiser, even more intelligent and you know more & better these days.
If you still can, upgrade your savings, continue sending those applications anyway, remember our mantra “Only one YES” is required, if I were you, I’ll have savings that can last me 6+ months post graduation, you’ll need it, bills needed to be sorted, let your family back home expect nothing from you onward until the sun shines again.
I remember you all today, as I do always, we’ve all been there, this shall pass too, just like all of your past struggles.
💪💪💪
Cheers mates….

What happens after you finish school in Europe?
Many people may tell you that once you graduate in Europe, securing employment is straightforward and that you can simply transition from a student visa to a work visa. However, this process is not automatic, nor is it easy.
Obtaining a job immediately after graduation often requires preparation, persistence, and sometimes a measure of luck. Employers do not typically offer positions solely because a candidate has graduated from a European university.
Careful planning from the first day of your arrival in Europe is essential.
Before graduation, it is advisable to ensure the following
📍 An EU driving licence (where relevant to your field or country of residence)
📍 EU-based experience, such as internships or volunteer work. You may consider volunteering through your international student union office or with reputable organizations such as Caritas or Red Cross
📍 Host country language proficiency of at least B1 level
📍 A professional CV tailored to the local job market
📍 An understanding of the work visa or post-study residence permit requirements in your host country
There is no guarantee that employment will be waiting upon graduation.
Strategic preparation, local integration, and early career planning significantly improve your chances of successfully transitioning from student life to professional employment in Europe.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,
If your goal is to meaningfully support your struggling family in Africa or Nigeria, here’s a strategic way,
1.Pursue a University degree in a STEM discipline.
2. Strive for academic excellence and secure strong grades.
3. Apply rigorously for scholarships to fund your master’s studies abroad.
4.Relocating with a STEM qualification is not merely a personal achievement, it’s a powerful investment in your family’s future, opening doors to economic stability and long-term prosperity.
5.Your commitment to education today can redefine your family’s tomorrow.
6. School is not a SCAM!!!.
7. Choose wisely, work diligently, and seize the opportunities that follow.
Best wishes.
