I sell handmade jewelry on the side, mostly through Instagram DMs. Got a message from a guy asking about a specific bracelet, simple, beaded, nothing flashy, one of my cheaper pieces.
Arranged for him to pick it up. Opened the door to this huge guy, tattoos up both arms, looked like he could bench press my whole porch.
Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous for a second.
He was polite though, straightforward, asked to see the bracelet again just to confirm it was the right one. I brought it out, he looked at it carefully, actually held it up to the light for a second like he was checking something specific.
Paid in cash, no haggling, exact amount.
Then he said, kind of quiet, almost embarrassed, "my daughter's in the hospital, she's been having a rough few weeks. She saw this on your page one night when I let her use my phone. Wanted to surprise her with it."
My neighbor's dog barked at everyone. Mail carrier, joggers, kids on bikes. Everyone except me.
From day one, he'd just sit at the fence, tail wagging, waiting for me to walk by. My neighbor used to joke I had good energy or something.
Last winter she got sick, hospitalized for almost three weeks. Her son was staying at the house but worked long hours, wasn't around much.
I started walking by more after I found out. The dog would throw himself against the fence every time, more excited than usual, like he'd been waiting all day.
Mentioned it to her son once. He got quiet, said the vet had noticed the dog barely ate that first week she was gone. Only started eating normally again around when I started stopping by more....
my boyfriend has "guys' movie night" every wednesday and i genuinely never questioned it, figured they were just watching whatever new release was out.
last week his phone buzzed while he was in the shower and a notification popped up from a group chat called "the sopranos." i figured it was like, an actual mob movie marathon or something, kind of funny name for a group chat honestly.
turns out it's not a movie club at all.
it's a barbershop quartet. four guys from his college friend group, meeting every wednesday for over a year, practicing harmonies in somebody's garage.
he came home that night and i just looked at him and said "so... the sopranos huh."
man turned red instantly. tried to play it off like it was nothing.
made him show me a video. they're actually really good?? like unreasonably good for four dudes who all have regular 9-5 jobs.
my roommate used to flake on her boyfriend constantly. show up an hour late without apologizing, cancel dinner plans over text with just "something came up," barely respond when he'd send her something exciting from his day.
she always said: "he's used to it by now, it's just how I am."
they broke up eventually her choice, said she "needed to focus on herself."
three months later she started talking to someone new. really into him, texting me updates every day about how great he seemed.
then it started.
he'd confirm plans and cancel an hour before, no real explanation
"running late" turned into an hour, sometimes two, no apology attached
she'd send him something she was excited about and get a one word reply, if anything
My coworker left the office at exactly 4:52 every single day. Not 5:00, not 4:45. Always 4:52, like clockwork, mid-sentence sometimes, grabbing her bag before a meeting even fully wrapped up.
Our manager noticed. Called her in eventually. Said it was starting to look like she wasn't committed to the team, leaving before others did, missing the informal end-of-day catch-ups.
She just nodded. Said she understood.
The next week, nothing changed. Still 4:52, still out the door without much explanation.
I finally asked her myself, not as a manager, just as someone who sat two desks away and had wondered for months.
my brother preordered GTA 6 using dad's card, not his own money.
didn't ask first. just did it, said he'd pay it back before dad even noticed.
dad noticed within a day, checking his statement like he always does.
called my brother into the living room, phone in hand, showing him the charge.
asked straight, "why is there a charge for a video game preorder on my card?"
my brother tried to explain, said he was going to pay it back, said he just didn't have his own money loaded onto anything at the time and didn't want to miss the preorder window.
@JessamyRx This is such a good reminder that you never really know what someone might be going through. A little kindness and asking one simple question can change everything.
@JessamyRx You handled that perfectly. Calm, respectful, but you made your boundaries very clear. Sometimes walking away says more than arguing ever could.
