Basketball has a lying problem. Everybody says they want to win. Until winning means fewer shots, harder defense, a smaller role, passing up good for great, and cheering when you thought you’d play more. Everybody wants the trophy. Few want the truth it takes to earn it.

Isiah Thomas said that years ago.

The longer I coached, the more I understood what he meant.

When you first start coaching, you focus on offenses, defenses, plays, and fundamentals.

And all of it matters.

But eventually you realize the best teams aren’t separated by X’s and O’s or talent.

They’re separated by people.

Can your best player celebrate when someone else gets the credit?

Can a senior accept a smaller role because it helps the team win?

Can the player who isn’t playing still bring energy every day?

Can players sacrifice individual success for team success?

Those things have little to do with skill.

But they have everything to do with winning.

Our best teams had players who trusted each other, embraced their roles, celebrated each other’s success, and cared more about the scoreboard than the stat sheet.

That’s when individuals become a team.

And that’s why sport is such a great teacher.

Someday the games end, and the wins and losses fade.

But those lessons always remain. 🏆

"I was probably 25 and I was incredibly ambitious and and I was trying to get to the top quickly. And then once Ann and I started having children, my entire perspective changed. I simply wanted to enjoy who I worked with, enjoy who I coached, and try to be the absolute best coach I could be."

The longer I work with coaches, the more I realize that the most fulfilled ones aren't always the ones with the premier titles or the highest paid. They're the ones who have clarity about why they coach in the first place.

Ambition isn't just chasing bigger jobs or dream destinations. Real ambition is chasing a better version of yourself.

You don't have to choose between being ambitious and being fulfilled. The goal is to chase excellence while protecting the people and priorities that make the pursuit worthwhile in the first place.
