If you're a social media manager and you feel like something’s off...
You’re posting, but not progressing.
You’re working with zero results to show
Chances are, it’s a strategy issue.
For the next 30 days, I’ll be sharing quick daily gems that has helped me so far
Are you in?🫴🏽
Let me say this clearly because the internet is doing too much again.
Social media management is not a niche under virtual assistance. Calling it that is honestly ridiculous, and I will stand on that every single time.
Social media management sits under digital marketing. That is the correct bucket. It involves strategy, content planning, audience research, analytics, brand positioning, community building, and in many cases paid media. None of that is admin work.
Virtual assistance is a support role.
Email management. Calendar scheduling. Inbox clean-ups. Booking appointments. Research. Those are operational tasks. Important work, yes, but fundamentally different work.
The confusion comes from the fact that some virtual assistants offer social media tasks. Scheduling posts. Uploading captions. Replying DMs. Once you strip social media down to just execution, it starts to look like assistance. But execution alone does not define a profession.
A social media manager is not just “posting content.”
A social media manager is responsible for:
Thinking strategically
Understanding platforms and algorithms
Knowing the audience
Reading and interpreting analytics
Aligning content with business goals
Protecting brand voice and positioning
That is marketing.
If we follow the current logic, then email marketing would also be a niche under virtual assistance because someone sends emails. See how unserious that sounds?
The reason social media management keeps getting shoved under VA work is not accuracy. It’s positioning and pricing. Once it’s labeled as “VA work,” it becomes easier to underpay it, undervalue it, and treat it like task execution instead of strategic work.
And this is exactly why so many social media managers:
Struggle with low rates
Get treated like errand runners
Have their expertise questioned
Are not taken seriously in rooms they should lead in
Language matters. Positioning matters. Titles matter.
Can someone be both a virtual assistant and a social media manager? Yes.
Can a virtual assistant transition into social media management? Of course.
But they are not the same role, and one is not a subset of the other.
If you manage social media strategically, you are a digital marketer.
If you are just posting what someone else tells you to post, that is assistance.
Simple.
And yes, I will keep correcting this conversation every time it comes up.
For someone that studied ENGLISH LANGUAGE in the university,
Transformative syntax
A. K. A “ yagi yagi” that topic doesn’t have an end, it’s just like maths but in English 😩😅
I had no choice but to fall in love with it.
By January 2026, a lot of job openings and freelance gigs will start coming in, like, A LOT.
Companies and clients will be hiring again, so take this as your sign to start preparing now.
If you don’t have a skill yet, learn one (like social media management). My students already understood the assignment.
If you already do, then it’s time to upskill.
For me, I’ll be taking an upgrade course in Ads Management to stay ready for those high-paying clients.
What skill or upgrade course would you be taking?
