You’ve probably driven on Lucas Mangope Road and assumed he was a struggle hero.

He wasn’t.

Lucas Mangope was the president of Bophuthatswana, one of the apartheid government's "homelands" or Bantustans. While apartheid leaders claimed these homelands were independent countries, many South Africans saw them as a way to deny Black people full South African citizenship.

For nearly two decades, Mangope ruled Bophuthatswana with significant power. To some, he brought development, roads, schools, and government services to the region.

To others, he was helping sustain the apartheid system.

His rule eventually collapsed in 1994 as South Africa prepared for its first democratic election.

So when you pass Lucas Mangope Road, you're not looking at the name of a freedom fighter.

You're looking at one of the most controversial political figures in South African history — a man whose legacy is still debated today.
