Ali Banat was an Australian Muslim businessman and philanthropist whose story became widely known because of the dramatic change he made after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Who was Ali Banat?
Ali Banat was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He became successful as a businessman and, before his illness, lived a relatively wealthy lifestyle. The organization he founded describes him as a self-made businessman who had accumulated luxury possessions and enjoyed financial success.

His cancer diagnosis
At a young age, Ali was diagnosed with a rare and terminal form of cancer. Different MATW materials give slightly different ages—some say 27, while others say 29—so the safest description is that he was in his late 20s. He was initially told that he might have only months to live.

Instead of allowing the diagnosis to make him give up, Ali began looking at his life from a completely different perspective.
He famously described his cancer as a “gift” because, in his view, it gave him an opportunity to change his priorities, turn toward Allah, and use the remainder of his life to help other people.

He changed his lifestyle
One of the most remarkable parts of his story was his decision to give up much of the luxury he had accumulated.
According to MATW, Ali sold his possessions, including luxury items and cars, and redirected his resources toward charitable projects. He then travelled to Togo in West Africa, where he began working directly with impoverished communities.

His thinking was essentially:
Wealth and possessions are temporary, but what you do for people can leave a lasting legacy.
The MATW Project
In 2015, Ali established Muslims Around The World (MATW) Project, initially focusing on poverty-stricken communities in Togo.
MATW Project
The project began with initiatives supporting vulnerable people, including orphans and widows, and expanded into areas such as:
💧 Clean-water projects and wells
🏠 Housing for widows and orphans
👶 Orphan sponsorship
🍚 Food distribution
🕌 Mosques
🏫 Schools and education
🏥 Healthcare
🌍 Sustainable community development

The important thing about his approach was that he wasn't simply talking about charity—he tried to establish projects that could continue benefiting communities.
His famous “Gifted With Cancer” message
Ali became particularly famous after a video in which he talked openly about his illness, his former lifestyle, his wealth, and how his diagnosis changed him.
The message spread widely online and inspired millions of people. MATW says the video received more than 10 million views.
MATW Project
His story resonated with many Muslims because he transformed a devastating personal situation into a motivation for sadaqah and service to others.
His death
Ali Banat died in 2018 after his battle with cancer. MATW lists his lifespan as 1985–2018.
MATW Project
Although he died young, the charitable organization he started continued after his death.
That is one of the most powerful aspects of his story: his life was short, but the work he started was designed to continue beyond him.
His Islamic legacy: Sadaqah Jariyah
A major concept associated with Ali Banat's legacy is Sadaqah Jariyah—ongoing charity whose benefit continues after the person has died.
For example, if someone helps establish a water well that continues providing clean water to people, the benefit can continue long after the donor is gone.
MATW describes Ali's legacy as beginning with three Sadaqah Jariyah projects and says this became the foundation from which MATW grew.
