1. Pick the professor before you pick the school.
2. Read their last three papers before you email them.
3. Ask if they have funded positions and what starts in your target semester.
4. Send your CV and a two-line statement of what you want to study with them.
Admissions committees read the professor's endorsement first. Everything else supports it.
