A Minnesota farmer walked away from law school, got turned down for a government loan, and built a Black farmer co-op that now spans seven states.

Angela Dawson comes from a family that lost its Iowa farmland generations ago.

After a 2017 USDA loan fell through, she bought ground in Sandstone and started 40 Acre Co-op the next year.

It now counts close to forty farmer members across those seven states.

The scary part about the cost of living crisis is that people are not struggling to afford extravagant lifestyles. More and more people are struggling to afford the ordinary things that used to define a normal life: a place to live, food, transportation, childcare and basic security. Somehow the basics started being treated like luxuries.
