Gatsby is so timely for today's culture imo. There are layers. At its core, it's the story of a narcissistic boy who wanted a beautiful girl to love him. Some people will say he loved Daisy. But if you really read it, Gatsby never loved Daisy. He never even asked a question about her. He loved the idea of Daisy loving him. He loved the idea of being wealthy and what their life would be like together. He only ever really loved himself & his fantasy.

Gatsby thought if he got rich, he could have that life. So he got rich. However necessary. He bought a big house and threw lavish parties. What he didn't account for was the difference between his nouveau riche self and old money. East Eggers may come to his parties, but he'd never be one of them.

You can't buy your way into old wealth. You can't buy the girl. So Daisy stayed with Tom Buchanan. Like she always would. And poor Gatsby died 'rich', delusional and deeply alone, surrounded by fake friends, misunderstood by everyone including himself.

It's a cautionary tale tbh.
