South African Learners Protest Foreign Nationals In Schools, Loot Shops Amid Rising Tensions
Schoolchildren in South Africa have reportedly taken to the streets in protest over the presence of foreign nationals in their schools, demanding their removal and claiming that local students are being denied admission opportunities.
The demonstrations, which took place on Wednesday, May 27, escalated into violence and looting in parts of the Western Cape, with some foreign traders reportedly targeted.
In Kraaifontein, about 700 learners from Masibambane High School and Hector Peterson High School joined the protests, disrupting traffic and allegedly assaulting a foreign national.
Video footage circulating on social media showed large groups of uniformed students looting roadside stalls and throwing stones at vehicles.
Police deployed Public Order units to restore order, while the Western Cape Education Department confirmed it was investigating the incidents, which are believed to have started at one school before spreading.
The unrest comes as Ghana begins a voluntary repatriation programme for citizens returning from South Africa amid growing concerns over safety and rising tensions linked to anti-immigration demonstrations.
