A few days before #AshokaVijayaDashami, I had the opportunity to visit #Nagpur’s sacred #Deekshabhoomi.

I enjoyed learning more about the Buddhist memorial, where Dr BR #Ambedkar embraced Buddhism on 14 October 1956.

His values have contributed strongly to 🇮🇳's global esteem

Remembering the Poona Pact.

It is true that Gandhi through his fast had coerced Babasaheb into the Poona Pact.
However, Babasaheb was hardly the person to bend to someone else’s will !!!
Understand this, my fellow Dalits brothers and sisters.

Babasaheb was clear that he would not “tolerate anyone on whose will and consent settlement depends, to stand on dignity and play the Grand Moghul.”

Babasaheb made the Savarnas-led by Gandhi to agree to measures in the Poona Pact which were precursors to the world’s largest affirmative programme — the policy of reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs.

People, often, overlook that Babasaheb was a master strategist as well.
Babasaheb was aware of the political cunningness of the Savarnas and knew that they would never, never accept his demand for the separate electorates but he forced the Savarnas to accept that the depressed classes must be given a political voice and made sure that no future political discussion takes place without the inclusion of the depressed classes!

This very insistence of Babasaheb led to 147 seats being reserved in the legislature; over twice as many as what had been allotted under the Communal Award.

This was one of many Babasaheb’s wins over the Savarnas and the Congress to politically accept and include the depressed classes.

Upon landing in Mumbai, I went to Chaitya Bhoomi and prayed there. It feels very special to come back here again. Every Indian is grateful to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar for giving us a Constitution we take immense pride in.
