People treat capitalism, socialism and communism as just another text book definitions, but these are the ideologies that shaped up our lives as an average human.
In Nigeria, the capitalism mindset is not just about setting our own prices and prioritize our Individual profit, it’s also how we personalized success, tragedy, misfortune and injustice.
A majority (not average) of Nigerians will never fight back against an “obvious” injustice, because they are not the victims.
We don’t raise a damn eyebrow until a tragedy hits home.
That is why you and I go to work the following morning after a 300+ school children were kidnapped instead of using the leverage we have as the majority to demand accountability from our government, law enforcements etc to get them out as soon as possible.
Until we start to treat capitalism and socialism as more than economy policies, we ain’t going anywhere with either systems.
What do you guys actually want? 😭
Shoday was creative enough to sample and almost perfectly recreate that Childish Gambino video. He clearly put money, time, thought and effort into the whole thing, and instead of appreciating the creativity, you guys are clowning it and saying, “Is it not too much for a YORUBA song?”
If an artist puts effort into a proper rollout, creates visuals, tells a story and gives fans an experience beyond just dropping a song, una go say na gimmick, say dem dey overdo am or say “na just song.”
But when artists don’t put in that extra effort, the same people will be the first to say Afrobeats artists are lazy, they don’t innovate, they don’t give fans enough, and they just drop music and move on.
You can’t constantly demand more from artists and then mock them when they actually go the extra mile.
And what does “too much for a Yoruba song” even mean? 😂 Since when did the language of a song determine how much creativity or effort an artist is allowed to put into it? ‘Yoruba music’ as you said can have world-class visuals, concepts and rollouts too. In fact, this is exactly the kind of creativity we should be encouraging.
You don’t have to like the execution, but at least acknowledge the effort behind it. Artists need room to experiment, take risks and create moments. If every attempt at doing something different is met with ridicule, don’t be surprised when artists eventually stop trying.
Btw really good shit, my bro @official_shoday 👏
