Bandits invade Zamfara LGA chairman’s home, abd¥ct him and family, k+ll five security operatives

Suspected bandits have abd¥cted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Bungudu, after att@cking his residence in Bungudu town and k+lling four security operatives.

According to Daily Trust, the g¥nmen stormed the chairman’s home in the Zango area on Thursday night, overpowering security personnel before whisking him away.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, said two police officers and two vigilantes were k+lled during the att@ck.
“They k+lled two policemen and two vigilantes, including one volunteer vigilante who had been actively helping to protect the town from bandit att@cks,” the source said.

He added that the chairman’s security team fought back but was overwhelmed.
“The bandits came into the town determined to carry out their mission. The chairman’s security team put up resistance, but they were outg¥nned,” he said.

The att@ckers initially abd¥cted the chairman, his wife and children, but security operatives later rescued four or five of the children during a pursuit.

“They k+dnapped the chairman along with his wife and children, but security personnel later rescued some of the children. Unfortunately, the chairman was taken away,” the source added.

He said reinforcements arrived after the bandits had fled and blamed the recurring att@cks on the gang’s sophisticated weapons and alleged informants.
“They don’t give any warning before att@cking. They come heavily armed and in large numbers. Despite the efforts of security forces, they still managed to escape with the chairman,” he said.

The resident urged authorities to strengthen security in Bungudu and other vulnerable communities.

The Zamfara State Police Command had not officially confirmed the incident as of the time of filing, with calls and a text message to its spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, going unanswered.

FG Increases WAEC, NECO Examination Fee From N27,500 to N50,000 for 2027

The Federal Government has approved a new examination fee of N50,000 for candidates sitting the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), with the new rate taking effect from 2027.

The approval was contained in a June 18 statement signed by Adeniji Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education. It followed a request by WAEC for an upward review of the SSCE registration fee.

The new fee represents an 82% increase from the current N27,500 charged per candidate.

According to Ibrahim, the decision was reached after a March 31, 2026 meeting between the Minister of Education and examination bodies, where the need to review examination fees was discussed. He said the minister also directed both WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform examination fee.

“You may recall that at a meeting of examination bodies held with the honourable minister of education on 31 March, 2026, where the need for upward review of examination fees was discussed, the honourable minister directed that WAEC and NECO should adopt a uniform fee for the conduct of WAEC and NECO SSCE,” the statement read.

It added, “Consequently, I am directed to convey the honourable minister of education’s approval of the sum of fifty thousand naira (N50,000.00) only, as the new examination fee per candidate, with effect from NECO SSCE (Internal), 2027.”

The ministry said the directive should be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
