In pop culture being Zen just means chilling out. In reality Zen Buddhism is one of the most hardcore, metal, and intense spiritual practices out there. Enter the idea of the Hara (腹 - meaning stomach or belly).

If you had to pinpoint where your sense of self is located inside of your body you would probably say your head. The normal person’s their sense of self or “I” is located where their brain is located.

The idea that you have to “descend to transcend” isn’t a metaphor in Zen, it’s a literal thing you to do.

Settling into the Hara is the practice of bringing your sense of self from your head into your actual center - where gravity is most equal inside your body.

To do so you must muster up the strength to, through concentration, literally move the perception of your consciousness from your head into your belly.

There are a lot of reasons for the practice but one stands out above all. By moving downward towards your center attention stops circulating in the head. By moving away from your head it’s easier to no longer confuse yourself with your thoughts.

It’s not until you paradoxically move away from the divine light of animation, rationale, and logic that such traits become truly and fully embodied.
