I did my Medical Internship(CRRI) in an era when interns were considered bonded labourers in Tamilnadu. My MS,& MCh residencies too. We were universally treated as slaves.
Our principal job was to buy coffee, snacks & food for our Asst Profs/Professors, daily. Refusal ws never an option since they cd easily fail us in our Final exams in MS, MCh. Also they wd refuse to transfer surgical knowledge to us. U can't learn surgery frm books, only by assisting teachers. In Internship, they cd refuse to sign our completion certificate, without which we cd not complete MBBS.
I still remember my Gynaec Prof in MBBS, who asked me to buy a silk saree, fr her signature. Since I don't usually wear sarees, I hd a tough time selecting & buying one fr her. Then there ws this Ortho Prof, who wanted Black Forrest Cake, from a specific Bakery, every week. Not familiar with either the shop or the area, I ws completely at sea.
During MS, a communal Professor identified my Christian Name,& indulged in such torture that I personally met the then Health Minister & secured a transfer to another college.
MCh ws a similar story. Except 1 kind Asst Prof, all the other faculty were predatory,& exploitative. One puny Asst Prof, Urology actually used to beat me, if I refused personal errands. I ws a body builder then & cd hv given it back to him. Coming frm a family of IAS/IPS officers, I hd clout in the corridors of power. Still I endured the humiliation/suffering in silence, as did the others.
The wounds that these experiences left on my young mind, still refuse to go away. I still spend sleepless nights, tossing in bed ruminating abt them. This is the reason that today when I hv power, I treat all my interns/residents, with the dignity,& respect that they deserve.
There ws one exception to this rule. That was Dr. V. Kamaraj, Urologist who radiated exceptional kindness & empathy. He passed away today. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved. R.I.P.
