HOW TO TRACK A STOLEN OR LOST PHONE. ANDROID AND IPHONE

If your phone ever gets stolen or goes missing, the next 20 minutes are the most important. This is exactly what to do:

For Android users:

- Go to android. com/find from any browser on another phone or laptop. Sign in with the Google account linked to your missing phone.

- Your phone will appear on a map showing its last known location. From here you have three options:

1. Play sound: rings your phone at full volume for 5 minutes even if it is on silent. Use this if you think the phone is nearby.

2. Secure device: locks your phone remotely with your PIN or password and lets you send a message that would display on the lock screen. For example "This phone is lost. Please call 08012345678." This is your best option if someone picked it up honestly.

3. Erase device: permanently deletes everything on your phone. Use this only as a last resort when you are sure you will not get it back. Once erased, the phone can no longer be tracked.

You can also go to android. com/lock from any browser, type in your phone number, and lock your screen immediately without signing in.

For iPhone users:

- Go to icloud. com from any browser and sign in with your Apple ID.

- Click "Find My" and select your missing device.

- You have the same three options: Play Sound, Lost Mode which locks the phone and displays your message, or Erase iPhone as a last resort..

Before anything happens, make sure you do these:

1. Enable Find My Device on your Android or Find My on your iPhone today.

2. Make sure your Google or Apple account is linked to your phone. This is the only way any of the above steps will work when you need them.

Do not wait until your phone is stolen to set this up.
