🎙️ How did your transfer happen? Were you planning to go to Japan, or did you want to stay in Italy, maybe even at Perugia?
Before the 2025/26 season, leaving Perugia never crossed my mind. I still had a year left on my contract, so I wasn’t interested in moving anywhere else.
Then things changed. Suddenly I was on the transfer market, so I thought, “Let’s see what my options are.”
My family’s opinion mattered a lot. My wife liked the idea of living in Japan, but even after Suntory Sunbirds contacted me, I didn’t say yes right away. I took my time, weighed the pros and cons, and then made my decision.
⸻
🎙️ So what happened with Perugia?
I had a two-year contract—not a 1+1 deal—but a contract through the end of the 2026/27 season. Then the club decided they wanted to part ways with me.
⸻
🎙️ Did Gino Sirci come to you during the season and say he wanted to terminate your contract?
It started with rumors before the Club World Championship. I heard the club was looking for a new opposite, but nothing was confirmed.
Then I could no longer accept the way I was being spoken to. I’d had enough. I was angry, and little by little it pushed me toward terminating my contract.
I just wanted to be treated with respect. As players, we all want our work to be respected and appreciated.
To be clear, this had nothing to do with the team or the coaching staff. Ask my teammates, the fans, anyone in Perugia—I truly loved being there. Before last season, I never imagined leaving. I wasn’t looking for offers or trying to negotiate a better contract.
Every day I trained to become a better player and contribute more to the club. What I couldn’t accept was the way the president spoke to us.
⸻
🎙️ Can we quote what he said?
No. I don’t remember his exact words anymore. Besides, it wasn’t just what he said—it was how he said it. It really hurt me.
I’m not happy that I left the club because I’d built great relationships with my teammates, and I miss that. But that’s life.
⸻
🎙️ Kamil Semeniuk was your “habibi.”
Of course! Kamil will always be number one. Then there’s Oleh and the rest of the guys. But at one point, I started feeling like the club didn’t need me anymore.
Imagine knowing your club is already looking for your replacement. How would you feel?
⸻
🎙️ So you spoke with the president and reached an agreement?
After the Club World Championship, we finally sat down and talked. It was actually my first one-on-one meeting with the president in three years.
I don’t want to make it into a big story. It was a waste of time, honestly. The whole situation was just… strange.
🎙️People are saying you’re making over €800,000 a season with Suntory Sunbirds—more than double what you earned at Perugia. That’s why European clubs couldn’t keep you. Is that true?
If that’s how people want to explain it, sure.
First of all, I’ve never publicly talked about my salary. I don’t think the media should be discussing how much players make. For me, staying quiet is a matter of respect—for the players and for the people working at the club.
The president said I wanted a higher salary, but I never negotiated with him. Not even once. And like I said before, I never went looking for other offers. I never even discussed a contract extension.
Because I still had one year left on my contract. I accepted the terms the club offered when I signed it.
Sorry for using this word, but what he said was complete nonsense. Those comments after the season really upset me.
But I didn’t respond, because I respect everyone
