Over the past few years; anytime a misfortune happens to someone; I get tagged consistently on social media by people to provide them pro bono legal support. Sometimes people tag our Firm @MertonEverett LLP

Anytime someone complains of any misfortune, people go and comment, “contact Oliver”.

My inbox is itself full of hundreds if not thousands of further requests; from people seeking legal support.

Many of which are stomach churning. The financial costs of providing such support are astronomical for our law firm; where for three straight years, our workload is 70% pro bono cases.

Meaning we rely heavily on the 30% to pay rent, pay workers, pay taxes, and cover the costs of the other 70%. It’s really really hard work. And it is taking great sacrifices.

My prayer is that we find a way to make this work sustainable; and that the State commits more to strengthening the Legal Aid Commission to do more. I want a law that burdens other lawyers and law firms to do more.

Today I want to acknowledge 1 person who every month without fail consistently donates 200 cedis to our pro bono work. Abraham Tetteh Addy.

A gentleman I have never met. We are not even friends on Facebook. Who has never asked me for legal help; or anything. Who anonymously took our pro bono account and just set it up so that part of his income is dedicated to this work.

It is because of Ghanaians like him, that I refuse to give up!
