FLOOD THE ZONE: Critics in Ontario say a flurry of government announcements on justice, alcohol and roads is designed to distract from sweeping changes the Ford government is planning to apply to FOI laws.

NEW: He and his family faced threats from the Taliban in Afghanistan after his brother worked as an interpreter for the US military, and then moved to the US and joined the Army. They escaped during the withdrawal.
Now, he sits in ICE custody at risk of being sent back — a fate his brother, now a US Army veteran, fears will end in a death sentence.
Asked about the case, a DHS spox said the man, Lal Mohammed Noorwali, has a “criminal history” of an arrest for assault and property damage. A 2023 case shows Lal was charged with “criminal mischief” but that the charge was dismissed by a judge in Galveston. DHS did not respond to follow up questions.

Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department.
He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.
We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.

Homelessness is out of control in Ontario. And a lot of that is because of a lack of investment in the solution to homelessness: affordable housing. But just what has Ontario been doing to address the homelessness crisis?
A recent report from Maytree Canada showed that the Ontario government is spending less on affordable housing than in 2013, and spending more on managing homelessness — but still not enough.
Homelessness has increased by 49% in Ontario since 2017. But the provincial government hasn't paid their fair share to address homelessness. Because Ontario isn't spending what it should, municipalities have had to increase their spending on homelessness — which comes from your property taxes.
When @fordnation announced $75.5 million to "end encampments" in December, only $44.5 million of this was new funding. This is a mere 1% increase in homelessness funding for the fiscal year.
We deserve a government who will do what it takes to end homelessness and respect homeless people's human rights:

Forcing 1 million+ displaced Palestinians in Rafah to again evacuate would be unlawful & have catastrophic consequences, says @hrw. There's nowhere safe to go in Gaza. The ICJ has ordered Israel to prevent genocide. The int'l community should act to prevent further atrocities.
Ontario’s Financial Accountability Officer has found that the Ford government failed to spend $7.2 billion of its budget last year, including $1.7 billion unspent on health as ERs are closing and surgery waitlists are growing https://t.co/cUGX1EZte9 #onpoli
The privatization of nursing care in Ontario is costing taxpayers millions of dollars (fees paid to agencies exceed union rate + pension/benefits)
Premier Ford should be protecting hospitals from predatory pricing by for-profit agencies.

Today marks three months since education rights activist @matiullahwesa was arbitrarily arrested by the Taliban de-facto authorities. His continued detention is a clear violation of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly under international human rights law. The Taliban de- facto authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Matiullah Wesa.
