Eric Schmitt: "Did you or did you not fall in love with a Native American woman who could talk to willow trees and paint with all the colors of the wind?"
Jack Smith: "That was John Smith."
Dressing as Chris Hansen for Halloween and showing up to people’s houses while they’re giving out candy to children and asking them “you see how this looks, right?”
Growing up, a hit song crossed demographics whether the genre was your favorite or not. People who don’t primarily listen to country still know Dolly, Shania, Carrie, The Chicks, etc. because they made actual hit records that crossed over. If a song can spend 23 weeks at #1, breaking records that stood for 20+ years, while a huge portion of the public is sincerely saying they’ve never heard it, maybe the conversation isn’t “people hate country.” Maybe @RollingStone should be writing about how streaming-era chart dominance no longer equals cultural dominance because there’s some trickery at play. That’s the real story being avoided. Don’t gaslight us.
I’m sorry, the clip of Zohran Mamdani getting on a Citi Bike while someone yells out “communist!” and him replying that it’s actually pronounced “cyclist” is forever etched in my mind.
I aspire to achieve this level of quick-witted and respectful clapbacks!
HD 13, which @AngieNixon currently represents, is a functional microcosm of the Democratic Party. Ethnically and culturally diverse and she had a message that resonated everywhere in the district both campaigns since the last redistricting. So it wasn't that surprising she won.
Where media/polling ops/FDP failed was discounting the actual membership of the party and mistaking Tallahassee 'respectability politics'/good loser syndrome for what voters want.
It is a blind spot. But it's the price of being taken seriously by the political establishment.
The massive disrespect Nixon got in the Capitol over the years taught her to persevere and overcome and stand strong in the face of character assassination. She was willing to stand alone on principle. She often did.
Rs now look to other her and marginalize her and talk about Fidel Castro or whatever. But Nixon's gift is she can talk about systemic issues in the vernacular. At some point, they will have to defend the system that fails more people than it helps.
Tough spot to be in when the tide goes out and we see who is swimming naked.
Ohh there’s a good back story!
Walmart didn’t just “resist” Tap to Pay… they waged a full 12-year cold war against it starting the exact day Apple Pay launched in 2014.
They helped lead a secret retailer cartel called MCX that tried to kill Apple Pay with their own competing system called CurrentC, which spectacularly flopped and died.
The reason is data.
Apple Pay hides your card so the store never sees the real number or full identity.
Walmart Pay forces you into their app so every single item you buy is permanently linked to your profile.
They wanted surveillance more than customer convenience.
They lost!
So if I understand the Flocksters correctly, it would be neither a 4Am violation nor a significant public policy concern if every time we stepped out of our homes, we were followed and minutely observed/recorded by a police micro-drone that followed us everywhere we went and into every public place, including roads, parks, paths, sidewalks, and perhaps also places generally open to the public such as grocery stores, restaurants, churches, concert venues, etc. Because hey—how is that a “search,” exactly?
That strikes me as right up there with Korematsu, separate-but-equal, and “three generations of imbeciles are enough” in terms of missing contextual constitutional forests for hyper-technical trees.
