Yes, you read that right. Almost every player representing Curaçao at the 2026 World Cup was born outside Curaçao. And it is completely legal.

Curaçao is the smallest country by population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, with just 156,000 people. They are making their debut at a World Cup.

And they did it with a squad built almost entirely in the Netherlands.

Here is why that works.

Curaçao is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its citizens hold Dutch passports. Many Curaçaoans have migrated to the Netherlands over generations, and their children grew up in Dutch cities, trained in Dutch academies and represented the Netherlands at youth level.

The majority of the squad are Dutch-born but have family links that make them eligible to play for Curaçao.

FIFA, through the FIFA rules on the application of the Statutes granted permission for players who once represented the Netherlands at youth or under-21 level to switch eligibility to Curaçao, including five who switched since August alone.

Captain Leandro Bacuna and his brother Juninho were both born in Groningen. Both represented the Netherlands at under-21 level. Defender Joshua Brenet played a World Cup qualifying match for the Netherlands senior team in 2016.

Tahith Chong, a product of the Manchester United academy, is however one of the only squad members actually born on the island.

The strategy is simple and brilliantly executed. Curaçao cannot produce enough elite footballers domestically with a population of 156,000. But their diaspora in the Netherlands can.

Young players of Curaçaoan descent who are unlikely to break into a highly competitive Dutch senior squad are offered the chance to represent their ancestral homeland at the highest level instead.

They get a World Cup while Curaçao gets a squad capable of competing with nations many times their size.

They are drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast. One of the toughest groups in the tournament. Dick Advocaat, the legendary Dutch coach, leads them at 78 years old. Even the manager is Dutch. He is the oldest manager at a World Cup ever!

This is diaspora football at its most effective. A lot of African countries do it anyway. No issue
