SEBI Published a study on F&O traders today and here is the summary

1. Majority of Traders Face Losses: 93% of individual traders in F&O between FY22-FY24 incurred losses, averaging ₹2 lakh per trader.

2. Heavy Losses for Some: The top 3.5% of loss-makers faced an average loss of ₹28 lakh.

3. Minority Profits: Only 1% earned profits over ₹1 lakh.

4. Transaction Costs: On average, traders spent ₹26,000 on transaction costs in FY24, with ₹50,000 crore spent collectively in three years.

5. Algorithmic Profits: Proprietary traders and FPIs were the main people who earned profits, mainly through algorithmic trading.

6. Young Traders Growing: The proportion of traders below 30 years rose to 43% in FY24.

7. Income Profiles: 75% of traders declared annual incomes below ₹5 lakh.

8. Persistence Despite Losses: Over 75% of loss-making traders continued trading.
