🍍 On Christmas Day 1733, King Louis XV received a remarkable gift: the first pineapple grown in Versailles' gardens.
🍍 Pineapples were a luxury in 17th Europe: used to the warmer climate of South America, it was difficult to bring the fruit back, and even more to make it grow in France.
🍍 Royal painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry commemorated this scientific achievement with this portrait of a pineapple, which Marie-Antoinette later kept in her private chambers.
