It's strange that the Avatar discussion has devolved into the argument it did because some people can't handle the fact that Ozai ran his family on merit. They cannot grasp the possibility that Azula actually looked up to her father, idolized him, and WANTED to earn/maintain his respect. Azula was sadistic and controlling. Ozai also treated her like most fathers treated their daughters - like princess. She was not abused. The world loved her to such a degree that she couldn't handle it when she encountered those who didn't - mainly her mother who chastised her for the same reasons the world loved her. And Iroh who treated her like a little girl rather than a respected princess.

She hated Zuko for getting her mother's attention she, in her mind, deserved. And she unleashed her wrath in Mai who loved Zuko. No coincidence that when Mai betrayed her for Zuko - this started her breakdown. She wasn't abused. She was proud to be Ozai's daughter and a ruthless Fire Nation princess.

Stop re-writing the story and characters to match your boring and bland "modern sensibilities." Not every character you like has to be a victim.
