I just listened to the James Talarico interview. Never would’ve heard it otherwise without the FCC chaos. These were his very last words:
“They want us talking about furries and bathrooms so we don’t realize that they are picking our pockets, that they are closing our schools, they are gutting our healthcare, and they are raising taxes on all of us while they cut taxes for their billionaire donors. The culture wars are a smoke screen because the real fight in this country is not left versus right; it’s top versus bottom.”
Again, the Republicans are going to have to do a whole lot better than “Vote for us because we’re not the left.”
It’s important that you understand what happened last night.
Last night, Stephen Colbert interviewed Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, a candidate who, by all accounts, is on track in the polls to flip Texas blue.
In response, Trump’s FCC reportedly threatened CBS if the interview aired.
CBS caved and pulled the segment, citing “financial reasons.”
In modern American history, no president has been more hostile to free speech than Donald Trump.
But censorship always backfires.
Here’s the full segment Trump didn’t want you to see.
people say “women aren’t paid less, they just pick empathy careers.” ok… but who decided nursing and teaching are worth less? like we’ll pay a sales guy 150k to move numbers around, but pay a nurse pennies to literally keep people alive, or give a teacher crumbs and wonder why future generations are failing every test. it’s not that empathy based work is less valuable it’s that we’ve normalized underpaying it because it’s “women’s work.”
I think the hardest part of the political climate right now is realizing how many people around me are actually evil. Not stupid. Not misinformed. Just blatantly enjoying and relishing in the suffering of other human beings.
The fact that there’s a cap on how much money disabled people can make but not a cap on how much billionaires can make is part of what’s wrong with this country.
No no everything's fine. It's perfectly normal for people to have 80 hour work weeks while billionaires transform into trillionaires and tech plutocrats feed all our drinking water to AI servers as the planet dies. This is the only system that could possibly work.
No no it's great. If you can't afford a house it's because you're lazy and entitled. Stop eating fancy fruits and vegetables and sleep in your cubicle. One time I saw a homeless person with a phone. Sell your phone and use the money buy a house, you idiot.
What do you mean you want taxes to go toward infrastructure and basic social safety nets? That money is for the arms industry, and for Israel. If you want a high-speed rail system, build it yourself.
If you're sad about being poor, ask your parents to loan you a few million dollars so you can invest it and become wealthy. There's a veritable smorgasbord of exciting new opportunities on the horizon.
There's still time to get in on the ground floor of the upcoming sexbot industry, for example, or the militarized police robot industry.
Create a line of children's toys with functions you can activate through a small monthly fee with flexible tiered payment options.
See if you can design a highly addictive social media platform that feeds people's information directly to CIA headquarters.
Invent an AI system that automatically freezes people's digital money if they try to start a union.
Make a new gig economy app that helps poor people sell and deliver their organs to rich people.
Or what about a boat that sinks if you let your Remain Buoyant subscription lapse?
They say there are giant continents of plastic forming in the Pacific Ocean. You could rent out apartments on those.
Cult leaders are generally good at extracting wealth from their followers. You could probably make a chatbot that does that.
Elon Musk is working on those Neuralink implants to connect human brains to computers. You could set up a company that beams advertisements directly into people's heads.
Speaking of advertisements, how has nobody thought of drones with megaphones blaring commercials at pedestrians yet? That’s a multibillion-dollar industry right there. They should fill the air in every major city on earth.
Capitalism is the best it's ever been, is my point. There has never been a more exciting time to be an industrious young mind with a dream in your heart and a roll of nickels in your pocket.
So quit your whining, commie.
Why have so many Americans been brainwashed into believing that their tax dollars going to things that benefit the community and individuals is a bad thing, but using tax dollars to bail out billionaires and corporations is a net positive? Are you people okay?
“Let them go a month without meals. Maybe they’ll get a job”
First, many SNAP recipients have jobs. They’re just living below the poverty line because of tremendous wealth inequality.
Second, many are disabled and children and can’t work.
Third, no one should starve to death.
NEW: California will be the first state in the nation to sell its own insulin.
It will be $11.
No Big Pharma price gouging.
Simple, affordable healthcare. As it should be.
“If we withhold the jobs report, there are no job losses”
“If we don’t measure food insecurity, no one’s hungry”
“If we delete right-wing violence research, there’s no right-wing violence”
“If we don’t release inflation data, there’s no inflation”
Notice the pattern?
