This World Cup is already exposing the western hypocrisy.

First there were reports of shootings near the English camp and now their equipment has been stolen.

Yet the same people who made a big deal about Qatar not allowing alcohol in stadiums haven’t said a single word about any of this.

They want to fly halfway across the world and lecture other countries on how to run things, but stay silent when it’s a Western country dealing with serious safety concerns.

In 1993, my mum sold the only thing that was truly hers.

That single sacrifice changed everything for two-year-old me:

My parents were both doctors in Karachi.

Those of us from a Pakistani background know that being a doctor is no guarantee for financial stability.

The UK and the USA were obvious choices, but the problem was that my dad would have to take medical exams, and he didn't have the money for it.

So my mum did what countless immigrant mothers have done before her. She sold her gold. 🪙 The one asset she had that was truly hers.

My dad passed the exam. At the age of four, I didn't even speak English.

18 years later, I graduated from the University of Oxford, having studied PPE from the same tutors that taught David Cameron.

I think about that gold jewellery a lot these days.

The risk my parents took. The sacrifice my mum made. The bet they placed on a country they'd never lived in, for children who weren't even born yet.

By the grace of God, that bet paid off.

But me, and countless other migrants, should never forget the price of admission.

Every time I sit in a boardroom or sign a deal or see our AUM tick upwards at Cur8 Capital, I remember that dusty gold shop in Karachi.

They don't make them like our parents anymore.

I can’t tell you how satisfying it was that after calmly being interrogated by an israeli officer at the border

They were the ones who cracked and started hurling abuses at the end instead of me.

Had an extra officer come in for the last 10 mins just to call us names. It was looking a lot like they went off script 🤣

And it wasn’t because of anything I said but because of what they found simply smashed does.

We even tried to wipe everything but guess they dug deeper but that’s fine we tried. That’s not the point.
