This was all repopularized by the Oxfordians and the romantics in the 19th century and it can be hard to shake that read cause it’s what we were taught in school. Shakespeare suffers from the same thing, the shadow of Victorian sensibilities haunt modern scholarship
have only read the fagles but “complicated man” is beautiful - vast improvement on the overwrought and silly “man of twists and turns” - as is “wandered and was lost.” Far more poetic, felt, and thematically rich read of the text, sorry!!
Ancient Greek is pretty spare. This was sung! (That said, I’d vastly prefer “sing” to “tell,” don’t understand that change at all, but:) the fagles (worthwhile as it is) is hampered by stuffiness and tortured wannabe Shellyisms that are as anachronistic as anything on the right!
