"What have you lost that you cry for?
What did you bring, that you have lost?
What did you create that was destroyed?
What you have taken, Has been from here .
What you gave has been given here."
-Bhagavad Gita

What's with this narrative ?
She is literally a child, placed in a cultural role.
And, these all can be overwhelming.
Crying is a genuine human emotion—we all experience it, especially when things get intense.
She deserves understanding and empathy—not a baseless fear-mongering.

My life journey :
The wishes on Doctor's day by my patients and well wishers triggered a lot of past memories.
I wanted to join the army till I was in class 10. I had a boxing bag at my home in my childhood, learnt a little bit of boxing and was ready for a fight too. I have no siblings, yet my parents were ready to allow me to join the armed forces.
Then the movie "Anand" happened. "Anand" portrayed the life of a terminally ill person and his doctor's struggle to treat him and come to terms with his mortality. I was deeply influenced by the movie and my goal changed. I wanted to become a doctor. In those days, parents never interfered too much in their children's life. Nowadays, it is difficult to disentangle parents from their children's life as they fail to realise the boundaries.
When I shared my goal of becoming a doctor there were many who discouraged me. My family doctor was one of them! He told me about the difficulties of becoming a doctor. I heard him but internally rejected his arguments. I was passionate about becoming a doctor and helping out people who were in pain.
I joined Grant Medical College, Mumbai. Little did I know that the lecture hall that I was sitting in will be shown later in a popular film "Munnabhai MBBS"; my elder son would sit on the same benches in future. The five years spent in the medical college were enjoyable in terms of friends and also in terms of learning. 206 bones, 640 muscles in the body. Learning how they are arranged is itself a big task. Plus other subjects about functioning and diseases etc. My batch-mates were a varied lot. 212 in my class. All were toppers from some or the other college. It was a unique experience to be among such a brainy lot.
I decided to do psychiatry and then conduct research in neurosciences and mental disorders. I had no intention of practising as a psychiatrist. But God had other plans!
After specialising in psychiatry, a doctor friend asked me to start practice and offered his consulting room. After much deliberation I decided to start consulting.
And the rest is history.🙂
One of my first case was an engineering student who had attempted suicide. I spoke to him for an hour and he got inspired to face his life challenges.
I started thinking. What is my job as a psychiatrist ? Is it to wait for people to get abnormal and then treat? I realised I should do something to prevent people from being abnormal.
I started going to schools, coaching classes and colleges to conduct motivational sessions for students. These sessions taught me how to be a better parent myself.
If God gives me another chance to live my life again, I will choose medicine again. The medical training has taught me to grasp any subject matter fast, to be sensitive to people's issues and has helped me to maintain a calm perspective towards life. It has given me a sense of purpose and meaningfulness. I came across so many dedicated doctors who inspired me by their passion. Sure, there are difficulties: stress of handling difficult and intricate cases, getting up at night to attend a patient, skipping meals, skipping family commitments etc. The list is long. But the upside is that it relieves someone's pain. Period.
I have never regretted my decision ever. I have never had Monday morning blues or the need to take a break. It has been a memorable journey. I have no plans to retire.
Sometime back, a girl studying in class 12 had come for a consultation. She wanted to join medicine but her relatives and friends were discouraging her. I asked her about her commitment. She said, "Come what may, I want to join medicine". I asked her why. I told her about the downside of medicine. She said that she wanted to study medicine to help out people in pain. I was happy to hear her answer. I could see my reflection in her.
I told her that people become doctors not because others encourage, but even if others discourage.
Because it is not a profession.
It is a calling!

From the 438 game to the 2015 WC heartbreak, a bulk of my childhood revolved around this team, before life caught up.
This win may not weigh the same as it once would’ve, but it brings joy and a proud smile.
