@militaryhistori @HistoryPegg I am not sure of your sources.I agree that Philby (aka ‘Abu Kim’) was as much a controversial figure as his son, but he wasn’t a spy for the British and he didn’t have any meaningful role in the Arab Revolt.Bertrum Thomas first crossed the Empty Quarter much to Philby’s chagrin.

It still does not put vessels out of the range of Iranian UAVs, missiles and USVs.

It will not do much to restore market confidence as long as Iran has the intent and the ability to disrupt trade going into the Strait from either side.

@janekinninmont I keep seeing side discussions about the disputed islands. The Strait is being chocked by mines, IRGC fast boats with short range missiles, larger land-based munitions and drones. Not sure Abu Musa and the Tunb islands are critical to maintain that hold.

@Thearabicword When Ibn Saud met Capt Shakespear in 1913, he complained about Turkish rifles because they were useless in the desert. He also said that his men didn’t like rifles with magazines as sand could get into the trigger mechanisms and they were not drilled in weapon handling
