It is time to admit that the Commonwealth does not only not serve its purpose, but works against its premise of post-imperial comity.
This is because it has become a little more than a poorly attended biannual summit whose only purpose seems to be to for Caribbean countries to lobby Britain for reparations. This does nothing but worsen these relationships.
My view was Botchwey was the last chance to try and pull the organisation back from this dead end but this had clearly failed. CHOGM is going ahead without any major reforms to its structure or meaningful agenda, resented by those in government involved in it as a result.
It is now only a matter of time before Prime Ministers stop attending our next King cuts the cord and eventually a new CANZUK-type summit or body is pursued.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham criticises Angela Rayner for including a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc in her survival kit
“I’m not sure that’s the top of the list… You need to have a clear head in a challenging situation. Some tins of food, bottled water. People are allowed a glass or two”
Maybe building our entire economy around services wasn’t a good idea. But at least we can pivot to physical AI in manufacturing & data centre buildout with our cheap energy and permissive planning system
If you think about the cost of immigrant workers in the care system in terms of wages plus long term welfare/benefits for them and family with ILR....it might be significantly more financially efficient for the state to top up care worker wages to the extent that our unemployed fancied it. No one's that into it for 20k. What about 50k? 75k?
Polygamy is illegal in the UK. Yet our welfare system pays out benefits to multiple spouses.
Conservatives @RicHolden helped introduce legislation to stop this today.
You must either want to “make the case for communities like Peckham” or you’re engaging in “divisive rhetoric”. There is no third option according to these people
So the reason why it’s not good to support anarchic violence is because it typically doesn’t stop precisely where you like it. You can’t wink at people burning a city down or think it’s based and then cry foul if other people do violence to the rioters
Theoretically, stuff like this is *such* an easy fix in the UK. The Labour Party holds >400 seats in the Commons. They could pass it virtually without effort.
But there's just no interest in a serious, pragmatic rewrite of the tax code.
@MccailColl Are we trying to create jobs or power?
Because if you want to create jobs, you could replace Jackdaw with 85 million jobs cycling 8 hour shifts on bikes hooked up to the grid.
A key advantage of domestic production is reliability - you can buy it months in advance, which smooths out the huge price spikes from geopolitical disruption to LNG, which we tend to have to buy in the Spot market.
So it should, indirectly, reduce costs.
Jackdaw gas field has been approved.
More UK gas on its way by the end of the month.
Is UK gas cheap yet? No!!!
Is UK more energy secure? No!!!
Will Shell & Equinor profits be up? Yes!!!
Will UK consumers be better off? No!!!
See how this works yet?
This gas field, which is so pathetically small it won't even move gas prices, is a climate disaster that will tip the world into environmental disaster. Much better we import LNG at spot prices instead.

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4
So true, Zack. The amount of energy produced by jackdaw could instead be achieved by 85 million people cycling 8 hours a day in shifts. That's over 3,148x as many jobs for the same output.
Why do these morons think job creation is the goal, rather than productivity and costs?
Sophy Ridge: "@ZackPolanski's also said [going ahead with Jackdaw], its only going to create 27 jobs. Is that right?"
The energy secretary confirms that is correct
@lordsidcup@SaulStaniforth@ZackPolanski If we got people cycling on exercise bikes hooked up to the grid, we could create 85m jobs!
Depends if the goal is energy or jobs, really.
