Minnesotan, coffee drinker, dreamer. Here to rant about nat sec, politics, a healthy planet, pop culture, and MN sports. Thoughts are mine, blah blah blah.
I live in NYC now which, obviously, has the best food but I’m genuinely despondent not to have the spicy ragu from Caruso’s (specifically, while seated at the bar at the Potomac Ave location) available to me in whenever I want it 😭😭😭 @mattadler81
An extraordinary leader - and a reminder that a bold vision can change the world. Ted’s insistence on the indispensable role the UN can serve for global peace and prosperity inspired me when I joined the UN Foundation early in my career, and it still does today.
Ted Turner, founder of CNN, died today at 87. https://t.co/KFwXB1Wzi5 Most obituaries will focus on his enormous impact on the media world, but I'd also note that he revolutionized philanthropy. Before him, rich people gave to museums, universities, churches. They spent more money buying paintings of women than actually helping women or girls. And then in 1997, Ted changed that almost by accident in a speech. "I was on my way to New York to make the speech,” Ted recalled to me later. “I just thought, what am I going to say?” So, to make the speech interesting, he announced he was going to give $1 billion to the UN to fight global poverty. (Here's the piece where he described how he made that gift: https://t.co/U8AXRVLjRB ) That started a competition among tycoons to be more philanthropic and led many more to try to help the needy. He made giving cool, and he saved countless lives. RIP, Ted Turner, and thanks for all you did.
This is outrageous. The Afghans in question are our allies, they stood with us for 20 years, putting themselves and their families at risk. What a disgrace.
Flight delays suck but honestly shout out to the @Delta captain and crew of 1377 and the entire team who worked the gate for this flight. Calm, communicative, and kind. It’s very appreciated.
The U.S. controlled the timing of this war. It could have taken actions in all these areas to protect Americans and it didn't. It is a major failure of basic competence that put Americans at risk, and the Trump administration needs to answer for it.
Exactly this. First you expel any actual journalists from the Pentagon, then SecState prevents the press corps from traveling… this is not a good precedent to set. The American people deserve the reporting the State press corps provides on critical matters of nat security.
I traveled on 50+ trips w the Secretary of State. We always brought reporters- from sensitive negations on Iran to going into Iraq during the counter ISIS campaign & more. State press corps are total professionals. This isn’t about security. It’s cowardice & a terrible precedent.
They care for aging parents, work in small and large companies, and harvest the food on our tables. On weekends, they walk in our parks and play on the local amateur soccer team.
For me, the choice is clear.
Here is my article for @nytimes:

What has unfolded in Minneapolis this past month betrays our most basic values as Americans. We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street. We are not a nation that allows our citizens to be brutalized for exercising their constitutional rights. We are not a nation that tramples the 4th Amendment and tolerates our neighbors being terrorized. The people of Minnesota have stood strong — helping community members in unimaginable circumstances, speaking out against injustice when they see it, and holding our government accountable to the people. Minnesotans have reminded us all what it is to be American, and they have suffered enough at the hands of this Administration. Violence and terror have no place in the United States of America, especially when it’s our own government targeting American citizens.
No single person can destroy what America stands for and believes in, not even a President, if we — all of America — stand up and speak out. We know who we are. It's time to show the world. More importantly, it's time to show ourselves.
Now, justice requires full, fair, and transparent investigations into the deaths of the two Americans who lost their lives in the city they called home. Jill and I are sending strength to the families and communities who love Alex Pretti and Renee Good as we all mourn their senseless deaths.
The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
Thank you, @SenatorAndyKim for sharing your dad’s story and his diagnosis.
So many American families are navigating this disease, and it’s unbearably complicated. Grateful to the Senator for shining light questions millions are grappling with while supporting their loved ones.
A few weeks ago, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I won’t lie—it's been incredibly challenging for me and my family.
Now, I’m embarking on a journey to answer the questions so many of us face when it comes to providing care for our loved ones.
I hope you’ll join me.
I’m a fifth-generation Nebraskan and lifelong public servant. For 20 years, I served in national security under both Democrats and Republicans.
Now, I’m running for Congress.
Nebraskans work hard and look out for each other. It’s time Washington did the same.#NE01
Secretary/National Security Advisor Rubio should remember what Jim Mattis said when he was in charge of Central Command: "If you don't fund the State Department fully, then I need to buy more ammunition."
The Trump administration has issued a sweeping new travel ban—including Afghanistan.
Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders are exempt from the ban.
Afghans can still apply for SIV status.
But let’s be clear: tens of thousands of others are now blocked from entry. 🧵
It’s hard to choose the most offensive thing coming from the Admin, but this takes the cake today. This is utter trash. People with autism are brilliant and kind, and are cherished family members, neighbors, students, and contributing members of our society.
RFK JR: And these are kids who will never pay taxes, they'll never hold a job, they'll never play baseball, they'll never write a poem. They'll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted
Grateful to Amb. Bridget Brink for three remarkable years leading our embassy in Ukraine. Her courage and commitment to Ukraine’s freedom show our foreign and civil service at their best — as does our incredible team at Embassy Kyiv. My enduring gratitude to her and them.
Frustrated with politics and ready to tune out? Wondering what Democrats can do to win again?
