I watched “Hamnet” at a screening.

In just 126 minutes, it encapsulates all the sorrow, pain, loss, fear, love and joy, healing and hope found in life across all times and cultures. That beautiful final scene has the power to rewrite the history of cinema. It lays bare the miracle of movies. To be able to create something like this, Chloé Zhao must be a witch, or perhaps an angel.

I saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film “One Battle After Another.” When I heard it was a “furious chase-action epic” inspired by Thomas Pynchon, I went in thinking, “Wait, what??” But with Jonny Greenwood’s score and all, what I got was a full-on PTA film-with black humor and irony. It’s not a movie about “revolution,” but one that declares a revolution in action filmmaking itself.
