Before I was diagnosed with cancer I exercised for 40 years after joining my first gym at the age of 20. I ran in a couple of half marathons but never a full marathon because let's face it I had to have a bourbon now and then. To prevent burnout and to promote future growth there is a process people who actively and frequently weightlift are encouraged to have engage...a deloading. I apply this same method to mental health.
Overload: politics, poverty, war, AI. We need to accept a reality moving forward, the bombardment of breaking nauseating news is never going to cease. Not For a moment. God knows what will happen with AI and our current fragile democracy. Jesus 2,000 years ago told us the poor will always be with us. In the same thinking "overload" will always be with us because we have access to information constantly. So we become overwhelmed from the “constant loading" of breaking alerts with the bulk of it not being positive. So to take care of our mental health we must deload. Translated… take a break if you are consumed as I am for what this will do in the future for today's youth. The first thing we do is give acknowledgment to this and in spite of our apprehension and anxious anticipation we renew our faith remembering we trust God. I suggest we stop (each of us) and ask ourselves " how is what I'm reading or listening to directly affecting me right now?” I do not want to say to ignore social justice or ignore the poor or ignore politics but you cannot give the world spiritual or mental nourishment each and every moment as you hold within your heart empathic concern. We don't cease our care but we take a much-needed break. It is not your fault others are starving, the president is killing innocent people in Iran, the closure of 1800 individual cancer clinical trials, whitewashing history, yet you can be part of the solution but that doesn't mean every day. No one here is Mother Teresa. If president Trump goes to Michigan as he did and tells an auto worker to "fuck off" and flip him the finger and we become outraged we must remember we were outraged about something else moments ago. We must stop reacting with shock. This does not mean we stop resistance but each of us needs to take a break from our personal counterpoints. There are those who may say, “I feel guilty that this is happening and I'm not doing my part.” I want you to realize you didn't create this and you're not going to stop this and you're not possibly going to heal all of this. You are and even during a break remain part of the holding-it together and putting-it together- again, yet you cannot exhaust yourself with constant awareness and agitation. As I have said regarding living with cancer, we have to continue inhaling and exhaling our lives fully without waiting for health to resume because we are 'still alive' even though we are sick. Therefore we have no idea what cancer is going to do tomorrow and I want to use this as an analogy regarding Trump, war, AI…that we don't know what is going to happen and though it is alarming that does not mean we cannot still live a full life right now. We cannot prevent that which has already sinfully occurred but we can prevent our emotional burnout. De-load. Walk away from it. Not permanently. But realize you can only do so much and each of us has to assess our capabilities, “What can I do without losing my damn mind?” You de-load so you can renew. God did not create you with the intention for you to live a life in fear. World power is designed these days with the intention to make you fear and when you succumb to them they gain more power. Your power in yourself manifests through self-identity. Your self-worth is possessed by yourself and only yourself. Not any government, a temporal power. Nor allow fear the possession of your authentic spirit. YOU ARE NOT UP FOR GRABS!!! You are worthy. Give yourself a break. Opportunities for healing and restructuring will always exist.

My friends if I could get on my knees and beg you to read this I would but that's not possible. Please consider. If I were to ask if you readily know that October is breast Cancer awareness month I am sure about 98% of you would know this immediately. If I said how many of you know as soon as I say that September is childhood Cancer awareness month I know the number would decline greatly. People speak of raising cancer awareness and it has become such a common expression that has lost its value in terms of seeking and accomplishing objectives. If someone says we want to raise awareness for early detection I say stop. Hold on a second. Don't stop calling attention to the needs but let's pause it for just a moment to consider there are issues in the cancer community nowhere near the same scope of focus such as early screening saves lives. Following October breast cancer awareness month we will immediately vote a week later.
I am begging you to raise awareness that there are people who will die of this disease needlessly because of the extreme voids that the man in the chair has allowed by slashing 30% of all cancer research funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH). With that being said there are 1800 individual clinical trials that were abruptly halted when that man took office. Now, here is what I want you to zero in on more than anything. If you talk about cancer awareness in September this is what I want you to focus on please. If a young child is diagnosed today with a brain tumor which is my condition he or she will not be allowed to participate in a clinical trial. There are no new participants. Do you get that? Did you hear that? Did you just read what I said? Young boys and girls can no longer be enrolled for brain cancer research? The man who is purchasing the United States is killing and bombing children in Iraq with our tax dollars while also taking those same tax dollars and preventing medical intervention for childhood Cancer.
THERE IS YOUR AWARENESS. NOW RAISE IT AND RAISE IT LOUDLY!!!
Thank you.
I am urging my followers and others to please read this and consider reposting. I do not want to sound like I am boasting but I think it's pretty insightful and I offer this to be helpful with others. I'm going to share in a way that you may not have heard what some of this is like so that you understand what you may be going through or may go through with a loved one if they are ever diagnosed with Alzheimer's or what I have, encephalacia. First of all I'm going to say something for the last time. I don't care who you are or how well we know each other or love each other. Anybody that makes medical advice on here will be blocked. I have said this before but I have gone against my own wishes because I don't want to hurt anybody. But I can't take it any more. Maybe some people want that kind of advice. I do not because it confuses me and then I find myself wondering that if you're right how come my doctors are not. And I threw one hell of a fit at 3:00am on here. I am not sleeping well these days and it is my fault that I came on here and discovered someone talking to me literally like I was a five-year-old. I have a community here and I receive comfort in friendship and I try to offer comfort and that is why I remain. At 11:30 this morning I will be getting the results for my latest scans.
Now. I want you to imagine that on September 3rd you find out you will have surgery on September 21st. You prepare, you have the date in your head and you make the adjustments with your schedule including plans of who will get you to the hospital and who will bring you home. You will be given after care instructions. You know about your diet and the medications you will take. On the 18th you know it's a few days away and you have a little bit of apprehension. On the 19th you do your checklist to make sure you are prepared and have everything in place. On the 20th you have a little anxiety but you pray and you persevere. On the 21st you cannot have anything to eat or drink after midnight.
With my condition there is no preparation. There is no calendar. There is no date. It sneaks up on you. There are no aftercare instructions. You don't know when it's coming but the episodes do. There is no admission. No planning. The episodes manifest all five of your senses invoking hallucinations to endless questioning if you are imagining things when confused. Rage. Wondering where your toaster is for your bread and you can't find it. An hour later you open your refrigerator for some other reason perhaps to get milk and you see your toaster sitting in the refrigerator. Then you cry. There is no calendar. There is no schedule. It's here and then it evades maybe for a day or two and then it sneaks back. It is unpredictable. And it makes those of us living with it unpredictable as we pray that we are not abandoned from the people that we love including those that we are putting through hell. ❤️
I have been having feelings of inadequacy regarding the death of Dolly Parton. I have had to think about this and not just a momentary pause but I had to go into reflection to identify this feeling. I have come to the realization that this woman's life has always been visible to mine. I cannot remember a time I did not know of Dolly Parton. Admiration. The inadequacy I feel is because there is a lack of completion. Because I never told her I loved her. But I never knew her in person. I don't like these feelings.
I believe love is often misinterpreted. Yes it can mean the all too common normative of falling in love with its warm fuzzies and how someone else makes you feel. If you look at the biblical understanding of love when Jesus talks about love I believe it is primarily of action. Beyond mere emotional expression.
I do not like feeling remiss or remorse and certainly not inadequacy so today I want to simply say that I love you all. By this I mean the following. As a member of the human race acknowledging each of you as a unique created individual in the image of God I respect your dignity. I honor it. Through the love I have for you even though I may not know your name or your location or your vocation or your nationality what I do know is I wish the best for you. I hope you live a life of meaningful contribution and I believe that if you do so others around you who know you will benefit and be better for knowing you. Through love I wish for you to have enlightenment and wisdom from God so that you too will honor all of his creation with respect and kindness. Within my love for you I don't want you to starve or to go without medical care. As a psychologist through my love for you I want you to have firm emotional health and if you do not then I pray that your pain becomes less intense toward a road of complete healing. From my heart to yours I hope you have teachers, colleagues, cousins, neighbors, passersby, landlords, store clerks, delivery drivers, the postal workers, boy scouts and girl scouts, mechanics, dressmakers, anyone with whom you coming to contact that they treat you with kindness and you do so in return.
In other words from my love in my heart for the human race I wish you peace and contentment with a fervent prayer that you understand you have one life and do not make any situation that doesn't matter turn into unnecessary concern. Ultimately from me to you I wish you not to waste this golden opportunity from your first breath until your last. God bless.
Dolly, I Will always Love You.
@RHughesPhD76721 I love that you say it’s an adjustment- there are so many things we can all be grateful for. I am grateful for your wisdom and humor and that I came across your posts on this app❤️❤️❤️ my dad used to always say “ I’ll keep on keepin on”
I’m praying for you Robert
@RHughesPhD76721 Good night… I hope you wake up tomorrow feeling blessed❤️Robert, you and your way with words have made a difference in my life. I look forward to your posts when I’m on this app. ❤️😊
I pray this helps. Someone. The last line of this is what I hang on to. How do I retain happiness in a world that offers continuous discouragement? And by that I mean a world that is changing so quickly that bit by bit piece by piece humanity relating to each other is dissolving quietly to a minimal communal engagement with each other. There is more engagement on cell phones than there are conversations at a dining table. There is an incredible obesity problem in the United States and I have noticed in the last few years that very young adults who are approaching college are huge. They are the ones who 15 years ago could have been learning how to have the training wheels taken off of their bicycles but instead they were playing in their parents living rooms on the floor with their laptops. No outdoor playground fun, just screen time. Covid has ruined the work ethic. Prior to the pandemic there were scams but currently there are more scams amongst people that it is stunning. Receiving a message from somebody telling me how they liked my book only for them to turn around and say “hey if you hire me I will market it for you but it will require you to send me your email address,” is disheartening. The government gave rental assistance when we were locked down in 2020. And people were told to stay home and some people even made more money by not working than working and then when all of this was lifted in 2022 the people who had all these handouts suddenly had to report back to work and as such many of them have elected to engage in dishonesty. Where is one's heart when they care nothing about somebody with cancer but rather their purse. An administration that is fascist. You pay consequences if you exercise your free speech publicly if you are in opposition to Maga. Education is on the decline and more time is spent talking about vaccines rather than cancer treatment for adolescents. 12.5 billion dollars from two men, one of them being related to the president, is spent to purchase the LA Lakers while in Los Angeles outside the coliseum there is a plethora of homeless people living in tent campments. And now enter artificial intelligence. We watch a video and don't know if it is a real person and we send a comment and then somebody else says you do know this is a robot don't you? I myself am a recipient of AI being incorrect. AI attributed my first book to a Robert Hughes in Australia. I'm still working on trying to get that corrected after 3 months.
The common denominator in all of this is a lack of honoring the dignity of the human person. How do I retain my happiness? And I am happy. Because scripture (Romans 8:38-39) tells me, and I believe it, that nothing can separate me from the love of God which also confirms nothing can separate me from the joy of God. Whether I am met with artificial bombardment or scrupulous thieves or the inability to speak to someone at a company without spending 20 minutes talking to an automated system who can't get it right, none of this can remove me from the love and joy of God. Nothing. Nothing means nothing. I live for God who is everlasting while every aspect of this present life is all temporary. Believe my friends. And hold on to God's hand and don't let go. Not for security sake but hold on because spiritual connection provides, sustains, emboldens, enlivens.
Robert here. It is no secret I am struggling and I am having complications. I'm not being discharged and returning to my home as planned. Yet. I am discouraged. But I know this is for a time being and it is not permanent. I would like to say something that I have alluded to previously and this is very very important to me. Dr Jared asked me something about 3 years ago. My response has now become a study amongst clinicians in Boston. They think I may be on to something. All I did was give my honest answer. If someone wants results from exercising such as improving muscle definition and wanting to gain muscular definition then they work out. They often utilize machines. They may use dumbbells. A man or woman may take a pair of dumbbells and lift them for 10 times which is a set and then pause for a couple of minutes and then do it again and then pause and then do it again. Three sets of 10. They may do this for five or six weeks and they are gaining improvements. They are becoming further toned/ defined. They continue to do the same exercise and suddenly they have reached a plateau. This is because the body has become conditioned and there is nothing new happening. It is simply maintenance. Without advancement. This is the analogy I have used for my brain cancer. I exercise my brain. I never reach a plateau. Because I never let it be the same exercise. It is constantly different. It is very important to understand how to exercise the brain from what I have taught myself and what I have come to believe. If you get up every day and your brain activity is the same day after day then you are not exercising it. This happens I personally believe to a great percentage of people in the United States and other cultures. Other doctors are coming to believe based on what I have said that this could contribute to slowing the progression of Alzheimer's. Cognitive decline I believe can result with a lack of exercise. If you wake in the morning and you watch your television programs or you listen to your music or your news and you have conversations with your neighbors and your friends, this is listening and understanding but not exercising the brain. From where I stand I would suggest exercising the brain is where you make a critical "different" response than you have before. If you take in the constant same programming and conversations and there is no "new" sparked interest then you will not have a new critical observation. It is the "fresh" elements you form in the brain that becomes exercise because you actually have to think as not beforehand. Have you ever noticed in some conversations where you're not really engaging or listening because you have heard the person say the same thing over and over? Break the routine, do something with your brain everyday that is different that requires you not to listen but to respond. It is the response that is most critical. It must be new and it must be said or thought in other words put it into action. I could watch somebody in a gym as a bystander but there are no results for me unless I exercise. So I beg of you to always utilize your brain power and challenge yourself every day to be creative as it is obvious I have done so with my writing. I believe God and my writing have preserved me thus far. If you would have seen and understood the particulars of my brain surgery and subsequent coma I easily could have died. Jared said I should have died and I told him to say could not should. God had other plans.
Thank you. ❤️
(Please consider reposting. I like attention). 😂
@drjenwolkin Exactly! I was diagnosed around 40 and going through major life stresses…. Now in my 50s and the hormones/menopause are still causing struggles… finally people are starting to understand what we have been and are going through! Thank you @drjenwolkin
Joan: Say Her Name is a true story. The dates and names are appropriate in their relevance with the only exception being the alterations of last names and the centralized addressing of institutions for the sake of safekeeping.
Here is a story of perseverance at the most unique time in history while the world shut down also for safekeeping.
Nameless in society’s normative daily comings and goings one man finally emerges from the bystanders and says, “What is your name?”
Everything changed.
