Today is the sacred occasion of Shri Krishna #Janmashtami. Our most beloved Bhagwan #ShriKrishna is known to have taken birth in the town of #Mathura, somewhere around 3200 BC, and we still celebrate the exact day and moment on which He was born. ThatтАЩs the power of our #SanatanaSanskriti and its unbroken traditions that have continued for thousands of years. ThatтАЩs the indication of the advanced calendars established by the Rishis of ancient Bharat that are fault-proof and count years, months, days, hours and minutes to an accuracy that none of the modern systems can still boast of! ЁЯжЪ
That said, this is also the occasion that has become associated with with a lot of folk-stories and beliefs that are part of the recorded history of that era. Yes, we do have this recorded history in at least three places. Harivansh Purana, Bhagvat Purana and Mahabharata. All of them penned by #MaharishiVedVyasa. ЁЯжЪ
The biggest myth that surrounds Shri KrishnaтАЩs birth is that on the night He was born he was transported across a flooded Yamuna by His father Vasudev to reach his friend NandтАЩs house in Gokul. Maharishi Vyasa writes that Nand and Yashoda had been staying in a house very near Vasudev-Devaki residence, for a few months. In fact they had planned their pregnancies together to facilitate a swap. So no, there was no crossing of a flooded river. Only a quick trip down the street. In fact Vasudev goes there twice. Once to swap the infants, and then again after Kansa kills the baby girl, to warn Nand of Kansa suspicion and to escape the city before the night is over because the morning may bring a search party to the neighborhood. ЁЯжЪ
After being warned by Vasudev, Nand and Yashoda fled the city of Mathura immediately. Again, they did not cross Yamuna, instead they traveled along its bank to the village of Gokul on the same side of the river, and reached their destination before sunrise. The distance being only a few kilometers, as can be verified from their locations today. ЁЯжЪ
Later when Kansa started targeting all newborns in the surrounding towns and villages, Nand and Yashoda, along with the rest of their cowherd companions in Gokul, decided to relocate Krishna to the nearby forest of Vrindavan, where they escaped from the notice of KansaтАЩs spies, specially after Putna (a careful reading indicates that Putna is the metaphorical firm of a biological weapon that was designed to target newborns in form of a seizure). ЁЯжЪ
Therefore it was the privilege of Vrindavan, to guard Shri Bhagwan from the demonic murderers sent, where most of His Bal Lila unfolded. That was where He killed a few rogue animals and men who bother the cowherd community. Over time they became known as demons sent by Kansa. ЁЯжЪ
While Kansa may not have dispatched all of those trouble makers, he was certainly getting the news of their annihilation. And it was from those repeated references of Shri Krishna emerging as a folk hero that he concluded that He was indeed the lost son of Vasudev-Devki, and decided to invite Him to Mathura under the pretext of reuniting Him with His parents. Akrura became his messenger, who surely conveyed the hidden intentions of Kansa when communicating with Nand and Shri Krishna. ЁЯжЪ
