For too long we’ve been living on borrowed time, exporting and landfilling waste instead of using technology to turn our rubbish into something valuable.

The past decade has shown us that drastically reducing the amount of waste we produce is going to take years – until that happens, we need to increase our recycling efforts and develop new infrastructure.

Northern Ireland exports waste because our current infrastructure is inadequate for the amount of material we produce.
Instead of waste travelling around the world, we need to build our own infrastructure and develop local jobs.

Paying to export waste overseas is not the way to deal with our rubbish and makes little environmental, financial or policy sense – particularly as the UK CCC has recommended that we cease doing this by 2025.
