in retrospect maybe it was a mistake to tell young people that reading, the arts, the humanities weren’t important and that “learning to code” was sufficient for a good life.

More and more the mass education and literacy we enjoyed from roughly 1870 to 2010 seems like a happy dream. I fear millennials will be the last generation where it was expected that everyone could read and write. Education gave the working classes too much power. It had to go.

I think most adults under-estimate how much the internet has become a pipeline for extremist ideologies. Kids need to grow up in the physical world. They need flesh-and-blood community. To really know themselves, they need scope to read and play and think.
