Between 2021 and 2025, Nigeria increased security spending from ₦1.5 trillion to ₦6.57 trillion. In 2026, security again received the largest allocation in the federal budget: ₦5.41 trillion.

While presenting the budget, President Tinubu said and promised: “We will invest in security with clear accountability for outcomes — because security spending must deliver results.”

To now say, "The security situation is what it is…” is difficult to reconcile with that commitment.

When security consistently receives the largest share of public funds, citizens deserve measurable outcomes, not appeals to resignation or suggestions that insecurity is inevitable.
