Apply this situation to the economy and you see why there are big problems ahead

The situation:
-two math whizzes leverage the latest *publicly available* AI to work on solving Navier-Stokes. They’re onto something.
-openAI sees it, wants to win, so puts 10,000 agents from their latest *private* model that is already light-years ahead of what’s publicly available on it
-they solve it in just a few days

The economy problem
-let’s say I leverage the latest publicly available model and find a way to detect skin cancer. I’ve spent tens of thousands on tokens, proven it can work. I get investors and build a company. A path to saving many lives and making hundreds of millions is clear
-openAI (or Google or Meta or Anthropic) see this hundred million opportunity and point their private most-advanced AI model and 10,000 agents toward my idea. In a few days, they win.

Repeat this thought experiment for pharma, legal, medicine, advanced materials, software…

@thenanyu @kais_rad I don’t think the reaction is due to the agent. It’s the interface.

Linear is associated with thoughtfulness and craft, so it’s surprising to see an important screen that is a copy everything else out there.

It would be interesting to see the why behind the decision

[Eli @_bernizz]

@zachweinberg @mattyglesias Curious how they define “helping people”. This seems like a justification for behavior rather than a desire to impact actual lives

[Eli @_bernizz]

@ajwaxman Adding this to my weekend project list

[Nathan Calvin @_NathanCalvin]

One Tuesday night, as my wife and I sat down for dinner, a sheriff’s deputy knocked on the door to serve me a subpoena from OpenAI.

I held back on talking about it because I didn't want to distract from SB 53, but Newsom just signed the bill so... here's what happened:

Yeah, I know Hunter got a few million from Burisma mainly cuz his dad was VP, but lol wow (link in next post)

"the kid who starved also had cerebral palsy" is one hell of a defense against starvation and genocide 😵‍💫

[Eli @_bernizz]

@wolfejosh How many Jews live in the UAE?

[Eli @_bernizz]

@IHeartyodeling I don’t think either of those points are true

1. Zohran explicitly calls for building more housing (including market-rate) and upzoning

2. He’s explicitly called for keeping policing at the same level today but adding community safety programs (like STAR in Denver)

[Eli @_bernizz]

So many people from SF with this take or something similar to it. Zohran ran an entirely different campaign, focused on different issues compared to the 2020 SF progressives. Impact of only reading headlines…

[Eli @_bernizz]

@zeynep @tracewoodgrains I think (and hope) the above is exactly the case.

The campaign focused almost exclusively on affordability and Zohran has shown that he’s willing to compromise in order to get outcomes for the things he cares about

[Repositioning Play @GoodGuyGuaranty]

Important article.

In effect, NYC elections increasingly pit newer renters against older homeowners. So the more rental housing we build - particularly in areas along the gentrification frontier - the more votes will go to progressive candidates.

Last night was a case in point.

[Eli @_bernizz]

@deliprao twitter isn’t a place for nuance, but damn all of these takes are so surface-level it’s exhausting. There are good arguments against many of his policies, but all people do is read headlines so all we get is “socialism bad”

It's actually a bit more mixed than this makes out. Cuomo's coalition is of the very poorest and very richest

It’s astounding how terrible @Optum Bank treats their customers. I’ve been lied to three times by support staff and wasted hours of time trying to get access to my money

[Eli @_bernizz]

It’s hard to say if I’d be different, but it’s pretty wild to see someone so clearly abandon their professed values for $$$. What happened @wolfejosh
