[News] BTS has declared that they will not submit their music to next year's Grammy Awards. Stating that music should not be categorized by region and language, they delivered a sharp jab at the Grammys for recently creating a new Asian music category.
All seven members of BTS posted simultaneous messages on their social media stating they would not be submitting their work to the Grammy Awards. They wrote that they hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being categorized by region or language.
​Previously, The Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards, established the "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category starting next year. They set criteria requiring the use of an Asian language in a meaningful way and for the music to be based in or recognized locally within Asia. Although they explained this as recognition of Asian Pop's growing influence in the global music industry, criticism arose that this move creates a barrier rather than expanding diversity. The criticism points out that it confines K-pop to "Asian Pop" rather than global pop music, effectively blocking K-pop stars from winning awards in the main categories.
​Even after sweeping the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards, BTS continued to knock on the door of the Grammys. Through hit songs like "Dynamite" and "Butter," they were nominated for three consecutive years starting in 2021, but ultimately failed to win.
Fans voiced their support on the Grammys' official social media accounts, posting comments such as "BTS doesn't need to prove themselves through a Grammy Award".
