Frankenstein wasn't written by a man. It wasn't even written by an adult. It was written by an 18-year-old girl... on a dare. In 1816, Mary Shelley was stuck in a mansion during a storm. Lord Byron challenged everyone to write a ghost story. She had nightmares of a scientist who builds life, and regrets it. That became Frankenstein. But this wasn't just horror. It was the first science fiction novel ever written.
Before women could vote. Her story predicted artificial intelligence. Bioengineering. The ethics of creation. It asked: If man plays God... who pays the price? They said a woman couldn't have written it. Publishers erased her name. Gave credit to her husban, poet Percy Shelley. For years, people assumed he wrote it.
Or helped her. Or "cleaned it up." But Mary's notes proved otherwise. The genius was hers.
I shares stories about women, daily
We have become too articulate about our suffering & too inarticulate about our strength. The more elegantly we describe our wounds, the harder it becomes to leave them behind. When a struggle becomes part of your identity, overcoming it feels like a betrayal of who you are.
