When you get out of prison you get $350 from MSD and it has to last until your first benefit payment which is 2 weeks after you’re released. $175 a week for a prisoner.

If they go back to prison we will spend $2884 a week on them. This is a low estimate aswell based on $150,000 annual costs for a prisoner. Pretty sure it’s gone up now. It’s around $200,000(?)

@perpluknuh That is an assumption and means if there isn’t they are fucked. Also, do their whanau want them in their lives? Depends on why they are in prison.

This payment for prisoners has not increased since 1991.

@GooseyGander12 If they find an existing flat, they are not entitled to any assistance other than steps to freedom. They have to figure that out by themselves and wait 2 weeks for their benefit to start

@GooseyGander12 They can get bond and rent in advance assistance. They will be paying that back for 2 years. Usually 20-30 a week from their benefit. They can’t get private rentals, so they have to go to transitional housing. Transitional housing is ridiculously expensive

@Capt_Caffiend They can apply for rent in advance and bond. It’s 2 weeks in advance usually. They have to pay it back and it’s like 20-30 a week out of their benefit moving forward
