I agree with you. It’s interesting how complex the portfolio decisions become when balancing regional market demand, regulatory requirements (esp. fuel standards), competitive landscape, and production capacity as a global mfg. Things don’t always end up in the consumer’s favor, or with the choices they most desire.

That may very well be true. But in the US, the market share of Sedans vs. CUV/SUV/Light Trucks is what it is. See left side of that chart. Sedans used to account for nearly 80% of sales in 1975. Now, less than 25%, largely driven by the introduction/adoption of SUVs.
