Arthur Blank was fired at 42 and opened a hardware store that became a $100,000,000,000 company.

He and Bernie Marcus ran Handy Dan, a home improvement chain in California. A corporate fight pushed them both out on the same day in 1978.

Marcus was 49. Neither had a job or a plan.

They sat in a coffee shop and sketched a store nobody was building. Enormous warehouse floors, low prices, and staff who could actually explain how to fix a sink.

Financing came slowly and almost failed. The first 2 Home Depot stores opened in Atlanta in 1979 and the parking lots stayed empty for weeks.

They handed out cash in the lot to get people through the doors. Employees were told never to guess at an answer.

The training was the product. A customer who learns to tile a floor comes back for the next project.

Home Depot passed 2,000 stores and a market value well over $100,000,000,000.

Blank later bought the Atlanta Falcons and gave away billions.

The firing arrived first and the plan came after.
